Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes Essay Example for Free

Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes Essay The painting Vertical Envelopment by Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes is obviously a modern painting that deals with the issues of technology, power, and war. These two Chicago based artist have displayed the power of the military through this painting. The painting symbolizes the stark reality that war is not a game, but a reality. The subject of the painting is that of a large black military helicopter that is centered in the painting. The bird’s eye view of the ground and the looming chopper, symbolizes the all knowing omnipresence of the military and through modern technology. The colors used to portray the ground are washed out yellow and gray. These colors represent the desert warfare or the Iraq War that the artists oppose. There is a black river that cuts through the painting like a half moon that is representative of lack of life. The medium used in Vertical Envelopment is aluminum and acrylic. Burtonwood and Holmes used the aluminum to give the feel of cold harsh metal of the weaponry. They chose acrylic paint because of its adherence to any type of surface. Any other paint would not have endured on the aluminum. The vividness of color would have been another reason that acrylics would have been chosen. The crisp black of the helicopter is essential to the painting. The style of Vertical Envelopment is more like that of social realism. It seems that this style would fit the painting because it is political in tone. One can tell by the dominance of the helicopter to the point that it is menacing and frightening, shows that the artists are against the war. They are also making the statement that machines are fighting the war and that is contrary to the idea that it is not the machines that are destroyed by war, but the people and the earth that are destraoyed. The lines used in Vertical Envelopment are mostly straight except for the river. The straight lines of the objects on the ground from a view much higher, gives a lifelessness of those objects. It looks as if there is order to what is going on at ground level, when nothing could be farther from the truth during war. The curved yet somewhat vertical lines of the river, give feeling of straying to those things that are straight. Burtonwood and Holmes also added vertical lines of gray and black to represent either gun fire or rain. This offsets that horizontal shape of the helicopter. The value of the painting is not one of luminosity. It is dull and drab, but that is for a reason. The artists do not want to add a glossed overview of war. The predominant color used in the painting is black. One reason it was chosen was that the main symbolic meaning of black is death which is a reality of war. The drab yellow and gray represents the lifeless earth after the ravages of war. The texture of Vertical Envelopment is smooth which is oppositional to the message that it presents on the negative aspects of war. Vertical Envelopment by Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes is one that speaks volumes to me. I feel that war is devastating to everyone involved and this particular is shows the harshness. There is a huge emphasis on the subject, the helicopter, and that says to me that war is like the metal and machinery of the helicopter. It is cold and unfeeling, yet it is powerful and destructive. It is difficult to run from it because of the vantage point that it has. The way that Burtonwood and Holmes emphasize the metal through their painting and the aluminum, strikes me because it makes their message so obvious yet innovative. This work of art speaks volumes to the viewer about the political situation of the world. ? Works Cited Burtonwood, Tom and Holmes, Holly. Vertical Envelopment. 2004.

Communication Methods: Advantages and Disadvantages

Communication Methods: Advantages and Disadvantages BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SHEIKHA A SEIF COMMUNICATION Communication is the process of exchanging and transferring information, ideas and knowledge from one person to another in organization. Business communication is the process of referring the information of the company and how to promote the product and services to potential customers of an organization. They are four types of communication such as written communication, on screen communication, verbal communication and web based communication. Verbal or oral communication is the process of transferring information and exchange ideas from one person to another through mouth such as speaking, telephone and radio. It is one to one conversation it is one among advantage of the verbal communication it is simple to talk with people (employee) face to face without fearing anybody in any place for example in MBPS company manager he talk with his employee by using verbal so this to know employee his or her problem without fearing you as a manager. Disadvantages of verbal communication It is easy to forget this verbal communication it is easy to forget the words you want to talk to people or employee, for example in MCBS College when you want to talk to DR. MUNIR sometime time you will forgot the question you are supposed to ask . This is one among the disadvantage of verbal communication. It require special area to conduct this is one among the disadvantage of verbal communication because when you want to communicate with people or customer you should have to talk to the special like in the office(between employee and C.E.O). This information it is very important to use because it increase most of customers in your company so by using verbal communication it help people to watch (television) and hear about the product. Written communication this is the process of transferring information through writing document such as letters, emails, texting faxes, and reports. For example MBPS Company they are sending they are emails by using computer or laptop from the other organization in order to get more information about external company. The source of this information is internal which come from IT department to emails this means that it is easy to use internet than another organization. The purpose of this information it help people ,customers and employees in order to get different ideas and getting information from different people through writing for example email when you have new product and you want to advertise by using emails it will easy to get new customers and existing customers by email. Advantages and disadvantages of written communication Advantages of written communication It provide proof it is one among the advantage of written communication because it is not easy to exchange the information it is already written so by using written information it is better than using another communication. Disadvantages of visual on screen communication Cost, this means that it is cost by using television for example when you want to advertise you are product or services it cost a lot of money to advertise than using radio, so radio it is good because it did not cost a lot of money by introducing you are product. It take time to understand by using this visual communication it takes time customer or people to understand what you are product about so they have first to watch then after a few minute they will understand about the product. Visual communication it is very important to use because you sell you are product by using television and easy to get more customers, because of people watching television so if they see they want and you will gain more customers. Written communication is the process of transferring information by using words such as emails is internal of business information. Emails is the process of transmission of message by sending and receiving messages electronically in a system of computer. The following are the pros and cons of email. Pros of email Email are fast this means that, it is fast to delivered at once around the world not like other written communication is fast as email for example when you want to send some information to your friend who live in TANZANIA and you are in OMAN you can send it take only 1 minutes to reach because it is fast. CONS OF email Virus email may carry viruses for example those small programs can harm you are computer system such as sending email to your customers or read your email so this virus it is not good because later on it will cause a lot of problem. On screen or visual communication is the process of transfer information and sharing ideas form one person to another by using mouth such as face to face. This is internal factor of business information means that is the process of sharing ideas from one person to another through face to face. The following are the pros and cons of face to face. Pros of face to face Express of feelings this means that by using face to face communication it helps people to share some ideas, and feelings better than using words so it good to use face to face because of the eye contact for example people who promote their product they use eye contact that help them to get more customers by using face to face. Cons of face to face Cost by using face to face it require a lot of money to conduct the interview which means that getting someone for interview is the higher cost in a business for example most of they use interview which is face to face in order to get employee who have enough so this cost a lot money. TASK 4 –D1 In Samsung company they are using verbal, written on screen and web based this help to archive their goals and also it help them to increase sales, increase their profit and also bring good image and reputation of the company . The following are the business information used to make strategic decisions in Samsung. Verbal communication Samsung Company they are using radio to advertise the product. this help to increase sales because of most people(customer) listening to radio they usually going to look and buy the product so this will increase the profit case they are increasing sales and later on it will be good for staff retention. By using radio it is a proper way because it is easy people to get the information at specific time. Written communication is used in Samsung Company to provide the information about the product. This written communication it helps to increase good image, and reputation of the company. So this help to increase number of sales who are going to buy the product by reading the information. Using a letter to supply is not a proper way because sometime it can cause to despair so it is not good to use letter. Visual communication Samsung company they are using television to advertise they are product this help to increase number of their customers. to advertise you are product by using television it make more profit as we see now days when you advertise your product by using television it is like you telling thousand people(customers) so this means that you will making good sales and later on you will gain more profit. By using television it is a proper way because thousands of people they can watch television. Web based this means that in Samsung Company they are using internet to increase sales of the product so if anyone searching for new telephone they will see by using website. This will increase the profit of Samsung around the world people (customers) will know about the product. Internet is a proper way because anyone around the world they can see the new product and also easy to buy by using online. Conclusion in any organization they should have to use this types of communication in order to have good image and reputation of the company such as written (letters), visual(smartphone), verbal(telephone), and web based(internet) communication this help to receive, sending message in order to reach the goals of the company. slavery and the plantation Essays -- Slavery Essays

slavery and the plantation During the era of slavery in the United States, not all blacks were slaves. There were a many number of free blacks, consisting of those had been freed or those in fact that were never slave. Nor did all slave work on plantations. There were nearly five hundred thousand that worked in the cities as domestic, skilled artisans and factory hands (Green, 13). But they were exceptions to the general rule. Most blacks in America were slaves on plantation-sized units in the seven states of the South. And with the invent of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney, more slaves were needed to work the ever-growing cotton game (Frazier, 14). The size of the plantations varied with the wealth of the planters. There were small farmers with two or three slaves, planters with ten to thirty slaves and big planters who owned a thousand or more slaves. Scholars generally agree that slaves received better treatment on the small farms and plantation that did not employ overseers or general managers. Almost half of the slaves, however, live, worked and died on plantations where the owners assigned much of their authority to overseers. The plantation was a combination factory, village and police precinct. The most obvious characteristic was the totalitarian regime placed on the slave. One example of this was a communal nursery, which prepared slave children for slavery and made it possible for their mothers to work in the fields. The woman who cared for black children was commonly designated "aunty" to distinguish her from the "mammy", the nurse of white children. Sometimes one women cared for both white and black children. Boys and girls wandered in around in a state of near-nudity until they reached the age of work. On some plantations they were issued tow-linen shirts, on others they wore guano bags with holes punched in them for the head and arms. Children were never issued shoes until they were sent to the fields, usually at the age of six or seven. Young workers were broken in as water boys or in the the "trash gang." At the age of ten or twelve, children were given a regular field routine. A former slave recalls, "Children had to go to the fiel' at six on out place. Maybe they don't do nothin' but pick up stones or tote water, but thy got to get used to bein' there." (Johnson, 40-45) Cooking on the plantation was a collect... ... with children would be less likely to attempt escape. The marriage ceremony was instructed by the wisest and most respected slave on the plantation, and included the ritual of jumping the broomstick. Males and females were expected to remain faithful after the marriage. The marriages lasted a long time, some thirty years or more. The life on the plantation was the only life known to a slave. Few slaves ever had the opportunity to leave the plantation so it was the only world they knew. One can think of a plantation as an isolated island, with occasional contact from the outside world. It was only through making contact with the outside world that slaves became aware that they too deserved freedom and gained the knowledge to obtain it. BIBLIOGRAPHY E.Franklin Frazier. Gerard Manley Hopkins Essay -- essays research papers fc

Gerard Manley Hopkins Gerard Manley Hopkins is a reflection of his time period because his work represents realism, his work was different from what was expected, and his work had to do with religion. Although Hopkins is considered as one of the great poets of the past, he was not that appreciated during his time period. The only reason that we have his work today is because his friends held on to his work after his death and decided to publish it for him in 1918.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hopkins age was defined by the change from romanticism to realism. This was a slow change but it was one that was greatly needed by Hopkins. His work was not very well liked by people because it was about things that were against the church (Bloom p.90). During his time this was a big mistake, but in the same sense this portrayed realism to its fullest. Although some of Hopkins’ poems seem disturbing, they are actually excellent pieces of work. He portrayed realism by only writing about things that were realistic to him and his society. People did not accept Hopkins’ poetry because they did not like him; they did not accept it because it went against everything they believed in. The church was the most important thing in peoples’ lives during this era and most of Hopkins’ work were about things that went against the church and its beliefs. Even though people did not accept his poems during his time, they are very well accepted now and a re considered masterpieces of his era.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hopkins’ work was ve...

Ghosts in The Women Warrior Essay -- Literary Analysis

Envision yourself as encircled by strange, yet terrifying and evil spirits that trouble you in your worst nightmares. The spirits could desire something from you. In fact, they could aid you in locale of frightening you. Should you attend to them? What do you contemplate they are trying to notify you? In one of the inquiries above, notice the ironical use of the word â€Å"fact† that endeavors to obscure the fictitious nature of ghosts. It displays that the meaning of the word â€Å"ghost† is equivocal. In supplementary words, the word â€Å"ghost† is multivalued, that way that ghosts can purpose in extra than one way. The word â€Å"ghost† originates from the Aged English word â€Å"gast,† and its synonyms are â€Å"soul, spirit [good or bad spirit], existence, breath,† and â€Å"demon† (etymonline.com). In the book, The Woman Warrior, that is, ironically, subtitled as Memoirs of a Girlhood Amid Ghosts, the author, Maxine Hong Kingston, uses the word â€Å"ghost† as a metaphor to typify her confusion concerning discovering a difference amid reality and unreality – the difference that divides her American present that prefers and her Chinese past that her mother, Valiant Orchid, filters into her mind across talk-stories that steadily daunt her to cross her established bounds. Ghosts, in the book, change reliant on point of view. Anybody whose deeds deviates from what is satisfactory in one area is a ghost according to the associates of that society. To Chinese people, like Valiant Orchid, Americans are ghosts. On the supplementary hand, Chinese are ghos ts according to Chinese-Americans (including Kingston, who finds her past loaded alongside frightening Chinese ghosts). Disraeli’s second ministry Essay

â€Å"Disraeli’s second ministry deserves the title a great reforming ministry† Discuss how far you agree with this view in relation to Gladstone first Ministry. A great reforming ministry is a government which manages to radically alter the political and social scene, aiming to deal with the most pressing problems and creating a long term legacy whereby later ministries aim to protect and improve what has been achieved instead of trying to alter radically. This is why it becomes clear that Gladstone ministry and not Disraeli’s should be considered a great reforming ministry. The aims of both ministries were radically different. Gladstone’s aims for his ministry when he came into power in 1867 were to try and create a more efficient and meritocratic society which removed privileges and advocated individualistic self-reliance. This ideology of beliefs were formed due to Gladstone long held religious beliefs which drove him and in the liberal ideas of equality of opportunity, tolerance and individualism he saw the best system to try and create a society based on Christian morals. Throughout all his legislation Gladstone aimed for the fair and just decision explaining his desire to try and pacify Ireland. This is in contrast to Disraeli’s aims as Prime Minister from 1874. Disraeli had managed to finally get the conservatives elected after being out of power for over ten years, and he achieved this through radically modernising the Conservative party which was represented in his Tamworth manifesto speech where he proclaimed the aims of the Conservative party were to protect institutions and traditions, strengthen the empire and alleviate the condition of the people. However Disraeli never had a clear agenda of reforms before he came into power instead his main aims were ensuring the continuation of power for the Conservative power, this meant Disraeli aimed not to disrupt his key support base of the middle and upper class and focused on reducing taxes. Additionally although due to his promise of alleviating the condition of the people he was forced to create social legislation to ensure minimal government intervention he aimed to make the acts permissive weaken their impact and focussed on areas which were non-controversial and where mild reforms could be implemented. This contrast reflects the differing impacts the two ministries wanted to achieve. Gladstone’s ministries reforms had a substantial impact. The 1870 education act with the setting up of board schools to complement the existing structure of voluntary religious schools reflect Gladstone’s desire to try and create equality of opportunity and to encourage individual self-reliance. This reform became the very foundations of the mixed school system which is present today, reflecting the long term impact this reform had. Additionally Gladstone introduced key reforms to remove privilege and create a more efficient government and army with the 1871 civil service reforms which meant entry to the civil service could only be achieved through examination and the army reforms that were carried out between 1870-1872 whereby the act of purchase was abolished and instead officer class could only be achieved through merit and amount of time privates would have to spend in the army was reduced to encourage higher uptake. This reflects the impact Gladstone was trying to achieve he didn’t shy away from attacking key sectors of power within society because he believed it was morally right and fair to remove privilege from the upper classes. This was particularity important for a working class which aimed to be free individuals who wanted the vote and an equal footing. Whilst Disraeli’s legislation although Important was hampered due to Disraeli’s desire to minimise the impact of reform and to only focus on non-controversial areas. The 1875 Artisans dwelling act is a clear example of weak legislation, the act meant that councils could compel owners of slums to sell their property and allow the council to knock-down the slums and then sell the land to private building firms. However the legislation was permissive so the council didn’t have to ensure slums were removed and it required councils to give compensation to the landowners and so by the end of Disraeli’s term the act had only been used in 10 councils making its impact very mild. Whilst other acts such as the 1875 Agriculture holdings act show Disraeli is unable to make truly effective legislation because he wishes to protect the power base of the upper class. The act should of ensured that tenants that improve their land receive compensation but Disraeli made the act permissive and stated that if there was a condition in contract which stated the landowner didn’t have to pay compensation then the landowner didn’t have too. Due to this again the impact of the legislation was minor. Other legislation shows Disraeli’s opportunistic nature and aim to keep power such as the 1875 conspiracy and protection of property act which reformed a piece of Gladstonian legislation which banned peaceful picketing this act allowed peaceful picketing which Disraeli hoped would give the Conservative support from the trade unions, to try and weaken the threat from the Liberal party. Even when Disraeli produced legislation which was aimed at alleviating the condition of the people such as the 1874 Factory Act which meant that by law women and children weren’t allowed to be made to work more than nine and half hours in a day but deliberately avoided the majority of the working population which was male and although the legislation had the impact of forcing factories to close earlier which effected male working hours as well it wasn’t the intention. Overall examining the legislation shows the difference in impact the two different ministries legislation had with Gladstone causing a huge impact whilst Disraeli’s showing only a very minor effect focusing on refining Gladstone previous legislation or reforming on very specific small issues to try and gain support. However both ministries were flawed though, for all Gladstone large and influential reforms he was voted out in 1874 and although Disraeli aimed not to lose any support he also was voted out in 1880. The reason why Gladstone was voted out were that his legislation was so wide ranging it impact on nearly every sector of society and as such Gladstone also lost his wide spectrum of support. The upper classes disliking his aims of efficiency feeling that they were breaking the traditional power structure of society against their favour. The middle and working classes were effected by Gladstone’s controversial legislation which was highly unpopular at the time such as the Licensing Act of 1872 and the 1871 Criminal Amendment Act. Both of these act reflects sometimes Gladstone misjudgement on what was beneficial for the people and how to create a fairer society. Also Gladstone failed in one of his key aims which was to pacify Ireland but he was the one of the few politicians who was truly trying to find a workable solution instead of coercion. Whilst Disraeli was voted out not because he had made a massive impact but because he was Prime Minister whilst the economy entered recession, this meant that his mild measure had even less impact and his expensive imperialistic aims were highly controversial. So due to the recession Disraeli failed to alleviate the condition of the people and his other aims meant his government appeared to stall resulting in his popularity dropping. Overall although his legislation was occasionally flawed the overall improvement and effect that Gladstone’s ministry had on the country reflect a great reforming ministry. Gladstone’s Liberal beliefs in meritocratic and individual society have become corner stones of British society reflecting the ministries long term impact and legislation such as the licensing act although unpopular at the time has only been amended never removed by later governments as they see the positive impacts of the restriction of alcohol. This reflected against Disraeli’s achievement of mildly modify Gladstone’s legislation and avoiding awkward decision domestically or trying to alter the status quo shows that his ministry cannot be considered a great reforming ministry. As such I disagree with the view that Disraeli’s government was a great reforming government instead arguing that it was his predecessor Gladstone that was clearly the great reforming ministry.

Personal Life and Hobbies Essay

One of the biggest problems of human kind is time. Although after retiring from their job people usually dedicate their time to an activity, which they enjoy. An activity that people enjoy doing in their free time is called a hobby. People in general have several hobbies, even if they think they have none, or no spare time at all. Some of them are fond of normal sports like: football, tennis, basketball, hockey or gymnastics; and some people like extreme sport, for instance snowboarding, roller-skating, bungee jumping. Sports are not only hobbies people have. The bug of watching TV all day bites many persons, and some are found of listening music, cooking, reading books and newspapers or even eating. We can say that the pleasure id the most important purpose of a hobby. Hobbies have many advantages like relaxation that can help you get rid of stress; and you can learn new things. A hobby can give you energy, happiness, personal accomplishments and willingness. In spite of these advantages, some disadvantages of having a hobby can appear. A hobby can be a real waste of money. Hobbies can turn into a kind of dependence like for instance a person who watches too much the TV is becoming a couch potato. All in all, if you are a rational person it is a very good thing to have a hobby because you’ll be able to distinguish the good and bad parts of a hobby. I have many hobbies like: playing chess, going out whit my friends, going camping, listening to music, watching sports like football, tennis, formula 1 and others. In conclusion hobbies are very important and we must let them be a part of our life because it will make it more beautiful.
